TOLNA, N.D. (KFGO) – A pig was shot and killed by a farmer north of Tolna on Thursday night after the farmer told Nelson County deputies the animal tried to attack him several times.
Director of Wildlife for the State Department of Game and Fish Casey Anderson said the pig had almost certainly gotten loose from a nearby farm. He said that North Dakota does not have a truly wild pig population and that “99% of the time” any pig found loose on the landscape here will have escaped from a livestock population or other domestic or fenced-in setting. He said those animals do need to be removed as soon as they are found, however, because of the risks of damage and disease that feral animals pose.
Game and Fish took possession of the pig’s carcass and is working with the Board of Animal Health and the USDA Wildlife Services to test the animal for diseases.
