WASHINGTON D.C (KFGO) – US Senator Tina Smith introduced legislation Monday that would legalize marijuana nationwide. It’s called the Substance and Safety Act.
The bill would regulate pot at the federal level, similar to alcohol and tobacco.
It would put safeguards in place to prevent people under 21 from using it.
Smith, A Minnesota Democrat, said it would also require research into preventing driving high and ensuring the safety of cannabis products.
Smith said her bill would complement other proposed legislation to expunge the records of people in prison on marijuana-related crimes and reinvest in communities harmed by the war on drugs, particularly communities of color.
42 states and the District of Columbia already allow some form of marijuana use.
