Going to a wedding can be tough, especially a destination wedding because that’s a lot of money you have to shell out. Plus, then you have to buy a gift on top of that!!! So how much should your wedding gift be?
Here are some basic rules…
A good general rule of thumb is:
- $100 base
- $150 for friends
- $200 for good friends
- $300 for family friends
- $400 for family
If you are in the bridal party:
- If you spent money on a bachelorette party/shower than you should still spend at least $100-$150
- If the bride has helped cover some of those wedding expenses for the bridal party than go with $200-$300
- If the bride has covered a majority of the expenses (dress, hair, makeup etc.) then you should be buying a gift of $400+
If you have to attend a destination wedding:
- It’s OK to downsize your gift, but don’t go lower than $50
And if you really can’t afford a gift then remember a true friend/family member will value your attendance over any type of gift. You could always offer to watch their pets, home, plants etc while they are on their honeymoon. Hey, at least stop at the dollar store and grab a nice card.
