MOORHEAD (KFGO-AM) -- The track and field are missing at Moorhead High School. They've been removed as work gets underway on renovating Jim Gotta Stadium, home of the Moorhead Spuds.
Athletic Director Dean Haugo says both were overdue for upgrades. He says the track is about 20 years old and the football field was last renovated about 14 years ago. Haugo says "this is a significant change for us, one we felt was necessary to better accomodate all of our activities. We'll be able to bring our soccer teams over from Horizon Middle School, and also be able to provide a better space for our physical education classes during the day".
The football field turf will be synthetic. Haugo says the field won't get as beat up as the grass turf they've always played on. He says it will make a big difference later in the season when the ground tends to freeze or get hard.
The work should wrap up in time for the fall soccer and football seasons. It's a $1.6 million dollar renovation.
