Fix to data-snooping problem is slow-go at Minnesota Capitol

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Minnesota lawmakers are running out of time to pass a bill that could protect citizens from snooping in their private data by public employees.

The sticking point is how to do it without making it too difficult for state agencies to do their jobs. Legislators showed some frustration Thursday in a hearing where state officials opposed some proposals being considered.

Some objected to a written reprimand that would be issued to any public employee who acquires private data without authorization. Public officials said that could interfere with due process and existing disciplinary policies.

But Lakeville Republican Rep. Mary Liz Holberg said the Legislature has to address the problem of data snooping.
