Power plant preparing for startup in southeast ND

SPIRITWOOD, N.D. (AP) - Great River Energy is preparing to start up a multimillion-dollar power plant in southeastern North Dakota.

Company spokesman Lyndon Anderson says the plant at Spiritwood will fire up its natural gas boilers in July and coal boilers in August. Production is to begin on Nov. 1.

Construction of the plant wrapped up in 2010 but startup was delayed due to a drop in demand for electricity in Minnesota. Anderson says demand has since rebounded.

The plant will produce electricity for homes and businesses and also steam. The steam will be used by a nearby malt processing plant and an ethanol plant being built in the area.
