Senator Heitkamp arrives in Africa

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today arrived in Africa for an official Senate trip to learn more about how the United States can better support growth in developing countries, particularly for women and children. “For the United States to be at its best, we also have to see what other countries are doing, seek out ways to collaborate, and talk about how we can assist developing countries,” said Heitkamp. “That’s exactly what this trip to Africa is about – promoting healthy families, good jobs, and strong partnerships abroad – which will also improve our national security and spur economic growth.” During the trip, Heitkamp will visit agricultural research and training centers and receive briefings from agriculture officials about the importance of supporting good jobs, promoting healthy food, and expanding to new markets. She will visit health centers to learn about the benefits of public-private partnerships in developing countries, particularly for helping children and women. Heitkamp will also meet with energy officials, agencies, and businesses to talk about the power sectors in African countries, as well as key government officials and women entrepreneurs. The trip will last almost two weeks and for security reasons the locations of the visit will not be disclosed until Heitkamp returns.
