250-mile transmission line to Grand Forks finished

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) -- A 250-mile transmission line from Center to Grand Forks has been completed.

The 345-kilovolt line operated by Minnkota Power Cooperative cost about $353 million and took more than two years to be built.

Project manager Mike Hennes says the new line can be compared to an interstate highway system. Hennes says that once the transmission line is built, the bulk flow of electricity moves to the new line, effectively freeing up capacity on the underlying system.

The station reports this is the longest line in state history that begins and ends within North Dakota.

Minnkota serves 34,500 square miles in eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.
