Series Part 1: Schroeder Discusses Secret Nuclear Mission

FARGO (KFGO-AM) - It was 1953. Retired Major General Darrol Schroeder of Fargo was once involved in a mission so secret, not even his family, or peers knew about it.

Stationed in Germany and France during the Cold War, with Soviet airspace just minutes away, Schroeder was one of a small number of pilots chosen to drop nuclear bombs behind the Iron Curtain. Schroeder was a freshly-minted fighter pilot who had been chosen for the mission by air force officials before he knew it.

Schroeder’s weapon was a 12-kiloton nuclear bomb strapped to the belly of an F-86 fighter jet. The relatively small warhead was a tactical weapon that would have been used in a nuclear confrontation with the Soviets.

Schroeder was just recently given clearance to discuss his top-secret mission, after decades of silence.
