Wood fire ban proposed

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (KFGO AM) -- A group of doctors says wood smoke is a major cause of pollution and more toxic than cigarette smoke.

And Physicians for a Healthy Environment is calling for a year-round ban on burning wood indoors and outdoors in the most densely-populated areas.

Dr. Brian Moench says some studies suggest wood smoke may contribute up to 40 percent of particulate pollution in major cities.

Moench says part of the challenge in getting such bans passed is that wood smoke is not a "cultural pariah" like cigarette smoke or car exhaust.
