Fargo (KFGO AM) Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney traveled 1400 miles to the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia only to find the 10 week course cancelled because of the partial government shutdown. After a week of waiting, he was told to go home after it was clear there was no hope the shutdown would end anytime soon.
Laney was among more than 200 law enforcement personnel from all over the world selected to attend the academy's session, offered to less than 1 percent of law enforcement officers. He says the cancellation created some internatonal embarrassment for the U.S.
While disappointing, Laney says he's keeping things in perspective. He says the shutdown has resulted in "real suffering" for many others.
