Health care providers train for potential violence

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- An ''active shooter'' drill at Hennepin County Medical Center this week is the hospital's latest training event for potential violence in the workplace.

Hospitals and clinics elsewhere also train workers to respond to violence that's becoming increasingly common for health care providers. Minnesota safety officials say problems with intoxicated patients or those in psychiatric crisis are spreading beyond emergency rooms and mental health units.

A couple of examples came in the past week. Authorities confirmed that obstetrician Stephen Larson was killed in his Orono home by a man said to be upset over his mother's medical care. In a Milwaukee suburb last Thursday, a man armed with a loaded handgun was shot and wounded on the neonatal floor of Children's Hospital.
