Fargo (KFGO AM) Fargo city commissioners will be asked to approve a recommendation from a city committee to buy-out 26 homes in the Prairie Rose development to make way for a dike.
The homes along 39th Avenue South are next to Drain 27, a frequent trouble spot during spring flooding. Project engineer Nathan Boerboom says after two neighborhood meetings, homeowners preferred buyouts over a floodwall in their backyards because there was no room to build it. Homeowners will be offered 110% of the properties assessed value and $5,000 in moving costs. The homes range in value from $140,000 up to $180,000.
If approved, acquistions would occur over the winter and ready for auction by mid-summer. Because the homes will be gone, the plan is to build an earthen levee along the three block stretch.
