CASSELTON (KFGO-AM) -- We're learning more about the train derailment near Casselton Monday afternoon. BNSF Railroad says a westbound grain train derailed a mile west of Casselton and hit an eastbound train hauling oil on an adjacent track, causing it to derail. It's believed 21 cars caught fire. No one has been hurt.
Firefighters, law officers and BNSF employees have been on the scene since Monday afternoon. The railroad says there were 112 cars in the westbound grain train and 106 cars in the eastbound crude oil train. The majority of cars in both trains were not derailed and many have been pulled away from the derailment location.
BNSF emergency response personnel and specially trained hazmat teams are working with local emergency responders to address the fires and spilled crude oil and says it will work with local officials to assist those impacted by the incident.
