Shelter opened during North Dakota power outage

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- Several oil patch towns in McKenzie County lost power during below-freezing temperatures, leaving more than 1,700 people in the cold. The Montana-Dakota Utilities system outage affected towns including Watford City, Arnegard and Alexander on Friday night and early Saturday morning. MDU spokesman Mark Hanson says the problem originated at a Watford City substation, where a piece of equipment failed in the cold. McKenzie County emergency manager Jerry Samuelson says a community center building in Watford City opened for anyone who needed safety from the frigid weather.
