SHEBOYGAN, Wis.(WHBL) - The city of Sheboygan’s 2013 budget comes back before the city council during a special meeting tonight. It’s the second time around for the spending plan which would reduce the city of portion of the tax rate by 8 cents per thousand next year. The budget failed to get the 9 votes necessary for passage last week, but 5 aldermen were absent. Mayor Terry Van Akkeren has vowed to veto the proposal since it contains the garbage collection fee, meaning it will take 11 votes to get the budget through, since that’s how many are needed to override a veto. The Finance Committee says the fee is needed to balance the budget. Van Akkeren has countered that using some cash reserves would accomplish the same thing. The council is scheduled to meet at 6:30.
